Ethics Probe Results

Read all about it here. These are the four findings.

Finding Number One

For the reasons explained in section IV of this report, I find that Governor Sarah Palin abused her power by violating Alaska Statute 39.52.110(a) of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act. Alaska Statute 39.52.110(a) provides

Finding Number Two

I find that, although Walt Monegan's refusal to fire Trooper Michael Wooten was not the sole reason he was fired by Governor Sarah Palin, it was likely a contributing factor to his termination as Commissioner of Public Safety. In spite of that, Governor Palin's firing of Commissioner Monegan was a proper and lawful exercise of her constitutional and statutory authority to hire and fire executive branch department heads.

Finding Number Three

Harbor Adjustment Service of Anchorage, and its owner Ms. Murleen Wilkes, handled Trooper Michael Wooten's workers' compensation claim property and in the normal course of business like any other claim processed by Harbor Adjustment Service and Ms. Wilkes. Further, Trooper Wooten received all the workers' compensation benefits to which he was entitled.

Finding Number Four

The Attorney General's office has failed to substantially comply with my August 6, 2008 written request to Governor Sarah Palin for infomration about the case in the form of emails.

The first finding says that Governor Palin abused her powers as Governor, without breaking any laws. Indeed, she was well within her rights as chief executive to fire Commissioner Monegan.

It's a contradictory finding, which offers nothing but a condemnation of an attitude, rather than an act.

Not much will happen to her as Governor, but it will still be used to beat her over the head with, in the popular press. You can make an analogy from Troopergate to Lewinskygate, but in the latter case, President Clinton actually perjured himself. Governor Palin didn't even do that.

A bizarre finding, which smacks of political expediency all around.

EDIT: The .pdf is here.

  • Kinda like the media furor over Bush firing 8 US attorneys... when no one even noticed that Clinton fired 93.

Oh well. You know, I hate to say it, but it might be better if McCain loses. As Althouse said yesterday, he will likely just damage the "conservative brand" anyway. Let Palin, or someone else with real promise, come back in 2012.

  • Don't give up, Knox. Legitimacy is not something we can afford to give away just like that.

    I am still fighting!

  • You are one of my touchstones when I think all is lost and there is no use fighting any longer.

Take care of personal business always, but let me know you are close.
