I Love You, Nick Saban

Let me count the ways.

I love you:

  • Because with your inimitable load of BS, you allowed us to have the longest winning-streak in 13 years

  • Because we have a winning season for the first time since that putz Dave "Wanny" Wannstedt almost ruined a team already living on '72 season fumes

  • Because we won AT the Buffalo Bills this season, and second to toasting the Dallas Cowgirls or New York Nyets, that rocks

  • Because we always start out every season, winning 4 in a row, then we begin our inexorable slide to mediocrity, collapsing in December as usual, just when we need it most -- but not this year!!

  • Because you are said to be able to curse for 30 minutes straight in Arabic, without using the same cuss word twice (oops, that's Lawrence of Arabia, but my point still stands)

  • Because that Hail Mary/CFL loser who beat my 'Canes once upon a time, Doug Flutie, had a desperation drop-kick, the first in 64 years, trying to beat us. It didn't schtoink the uprights, but it ultimately failed, bwahahaha!, ahem

  • Because you have a better tan than even me, you pasty white and yet deliciously handsome LSU bugger

  • But the number one reason that I love you, is that you actually made Ed Pope, that self-important gassy windbag who loves SAT words, praise the Dolphins, even when the going was good.

Maybe I didn't watch every game the Fins played this season.

Maybe I gave up on you lot earlier than I should've (although my dad watched faithfully every Sunday, heh, sucker).

Maybe I am just a fair-weather fan, like all South Floridians are notorious for being.

But I still won my Yahoo WINNERS Public League, and you didn't, okay?

Just do it again next season, with mucho more Ws, and I promise, you and I will continue to feather our cosy love nest for years to come.

    • Just realize that the win against the Patriots was more or less a gift. Aside from the first 1/4 the Pats had their second and third string in for the entire game. If the game had had more meaning, have no doubt that the first string would have been in the whole game and the results would have been completely different.

      Woulda shoulda coulda. Loser talk.

The Patriots of 3 years running would never have allowed this loss to happen, no matter how meaningless the game.

      And you KNOW it!

    • You are ruthless and demanding in Sports and Love..... Apparently.

Remind me never to stop in for at least a week should your Fins ever beat my Steels.
      Like that could happen.

Tonight though, it's as if we are strangers, unless you don't like the Seminoles in which case, come on over and watch their dismantling by those lovable boys in Blue and White, guided by St. Paterno.

    • You are ruthless and demanding in Sports and Love..... Apparently.

Yes, I am. And don't you forget it!

Remind me never to stop in for at least a week should your Fins ever beat my Steels.

I loooooved the Steelers of the 70s. Even that crazy and possibly mentally challenged ex-QB of yours.

      And the Purple People Eaters.

I don't forget that Marino is a Pennsylvania lad either.

      Good times.

      Like that could happen.

      Ooh! Fight!

Tonight though, it's as if we are strangers, unless you don't like the Seminoles in which case, come on over and watch their dismantling by those lovable boys in Blue and White, guided by St. Paterno.

      Come closer, Paul. No, closer.

      I HATE THE NOLES, okay?

      HATE.

      As in HATE.

      H-A-T-E.

GO PENN STATE and the Schnozzola!

P.S.: Thanks for reminding me! I tuned in just as Penn State got the TD. :)

P.P.S.: Renato asked me the other night, who are the Canes' deadliest rivals?

      I told him it depends.

If you're over 40, U of Florida Gator's (hi Jose!).

If you're under 40, as I am, it's Florida State Univ. Seminoles.

Just saying that name gives me the willies.

      Cheers,

    • Understood. My Ally. 1st Quarter in the bag, interception no harm. Say, you're perfect in every way! Except one.

    • On the other hand.......There's something happening here, what it is, etc. Poor Joe.
Robinson has trouble with the BIG games.

I loved those Steelers too, even the crazy ex-blond guy. He called all of his plays and took a beating but kept on ticking.

Wait till the 2nd half, if they lose, I'll be out of town for a few weeks. Sorry, wish I didn't have too, things must be done, you know.

    • Anyone who can win with Gus Frerotte deserves a blog entry of their own. 9-7 would have put you in the playoffs back when there was more parity.

What happens with the RB situation? Does Ronnie Brown or Ricky Williams stay?

There's even a rumour of Philip Rivers to Miami. It should make for an interesting offseason!

Lay off former argo mighty mite or I will have to start a squish the fish chant.;)

      Hang on, Paul!

Penn State's ace in the hole is the ABYSMAL FSU place-kicker tradition.

I loved those Steelers too, even the crazy ex-blond guy. He called all of his plays and took a beating but kept on ticking.

He and Allen Iversen have something in common?

Apart from the cornrows and tats, obviously.

Wait till the 2nd half, if they lose, I'll be out of town for a few weeks. Sorry, wish I didn't have too, things must be done, you know.

My God! Sundries can't survive that.

      GO NITTANY LIONS!

    • Anyone who can win with Gus Frerotte deserves a blog entry of their own.

Don't laugh, but I like Gus.

He's way better than Jay Fiedler, albeit I liked the quirkiness of having the only 1/2 Jewish-QB duo in NFL history. :)

9-7 would have put you in the playoffs back when there was more parity.

The dread "parity" word. The NFL is obsessed by it.

What happens with the RB situation? Does Ronnie Brown or Ricky Williams stay?

I don't hate Ricky Williams, and I admire him for what he did this year, at minimum salary.

But what he did, for me, was unforgiveable.

Sell Ricky, before he quits on us again.

There's even a rumour of Philip Rivers to Miami. It should make for an interesting offseason!

Now that Brees has gone down though? Who knows.

Can't we have a shot at Leinart? :(

    • Impeccable manners, even when requiring the biggest fib of your life!

      Bah.

It's true that I have a born diplomat's distaste for uttering truths which may hurt people.

But I am a sincere person.

If I said it, I meant it, Paul.

What a wonderful person! I swear fealty to the Cane's except when playing the Lions.

I had to read that a few times!

"Detroit Lions got relegated to College Football??"

      Remarkable!
      On top again!

Did I just hear that Bobby and Joe are 74, and 79 years-old respectively?

      Wow. Respect.

I know that, I learned it early on at Sundries. I can't write with words at my disposal, the respect I have for you.

"Detroit Lions got relegated to College Football??"

I meant Nittany Lions. There used to be some on Mt Nittany, may still be, the locals like to think.
Of course, the Detroit Lions seem mythical this year too.

Bobby and Joe are near ancient and one victory apart in their career.
Joe has gotten more feisty with the refs than he used to be. I wish he wasn't. He's always been class.

      Thanks. :)

Ohh, I see. I wondered about that too.

Of course, the Detroit Lions seem mythical this year too.

      Joey Harrington sucks!

Bobby and Joe are near ancient and one victory apart in their career.

I like how in college ball (any ball), you have coaches which are co-synonymous with their athletic programmes.

Even the dread Dookies and Coach K.

      I like longevity.

Joe has gotten more feisty with the refs than he used to be. I wish he wasn't. He's always been class.

      You know!

It's funny you mention that, as I was ABOUT to post earlier about Joe Paterno.

Did you see that HT segment where they showed him being feisty at the camera?

      "Get out of here!".

It reminded me recently of a cuss-word tirade Coach Paterno had against a ref.

When Jimmy Cefalo (which you'll remember I mentioned before) was analysing that in our Sunday night wrap-up show once, he said,

"Wow, I don't remember the coach ever getting that hot under the collar"

Jimmy is a classy guy himself, so I know if he said it, it must've been true.

      Ah well.

I guess as he grew older, he thought people would feel less inclined to question his intensity for the game, if he himself got more intense.

      Cheers,

I did. That's what I meant. (He shoulda have an assistant coach do it!)

I do remember and he's right, slowly as the years have gone by, he's gotten less tolerant in this young man's game. Whatever it is due to, it's not nice to watch him lose it so much.

If Joey Harrington is in the NFL next year it's because his Dad owns a team. He's had a lot of chances.

He comes from good athletic stock though.
