Beija-Flor 2007 Champs!

My favourite Samba School, Beija-Flor, are the new Rio Carnival School champs, again!

According to Wiki, since their founding in 1948, they have:

9 Championships!

1976, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1983, 1998, 2003, 2004, 2005 & 2007

They were "vice-champs" (as runners-up are called in Portuguese) 10 times:

1979, 1981, 1985, 1986, 1989, 1990, 1999, 2000, 2001 & 2002

In 2001, I recall that they lost by .5 points, to Imperatriz which was absolutely devastating to them at the time.

In 2007, they won by a 1.4 point differential, which by the old system would've been an almost unimaginable 14 points difference.

The equivalent of Secretariat winning the Kentucky Derby by 30 lengths. :)

By the way, Brazilians called the 40 judges' scores outrageous.

"Deu a louca nos juizes"

(The judges went NUTS!)

Heavily touted for their magnificent display, Salgueiro didn't even finish 3rd, allowing them a place in this Saturday's parade of champions.

Yes, there is still a quasi-carnival parade on Saturday.

Brazilians never stop! :)
