According to this research, being a scaredy cat (they didn't analyze the reasons, obviously, but my take is that they are hereditary, or at least developmental) strongly correlates with holding Republican (or reactionary, which is the same in my book) beliefs.
More and more behavior traits turn out to be firmware rather than software (remember the Swedish experiment where they proved that the sense of justice is genetically determined), a tendency that does not surprise me at all (or your Dad, if I correctly remember what you have written here about his beliefs).
