I'm BACK and he's GONE!!

(Welcome Michelle Malkin readers! See "What Will Happen When Castro Dies" below)

Friends:

I owe you a million and one apologies for my sudden, and prolonged absence from Sundries.

I had wanted to return properly, with a more sedate, but fun post (as I hope, is my wont), next Monday, 7 August -- which is also my birthday.

But today, due to momentous events, I return with a bouncing joy to my beloved blog.

When I received in the post earlier today, a brand-new DELL computer, little did I realise my private glee would be transformed tonight into even more heightened feelings.

Because today, 31 July 2006, FIDEL CASTRO HAS STEPPED DOWN as the non-elected "President" of Cuba.

Do you know what this means? Really, and truly means?

For the first time in almost half-a-century of personality cult dictatorship, of separation of families, of rafts, of deprivations not due to any embargo, but the need to subjugate a whole people because of one person's madness, CUBA IS FREER TONIGHT than she's been since 1959.

I am not Cuban.

But you know how much this means to you, even if you've only read my quirky blog for a small length of time.

Words cannot properly describe the relief I feel, for all the dozens of Cuban-American friends I have had throughout my life, and the many who I have met on the internet.

So today, I ask you to drink a toast for freedom.

Jose. Val. Robert. Charlie. Your people are free. If not now, ahora mismito, you will be soon.

ALABAO! QUE COSA MAS GRANDE CHICO.

I am on my way to Versailles, in the heart of Little Havana, like I promised so many months ago!

  • Welcome back Vicks!
On time for a big bang celebration!

  • Charlie!!

Que gusto me dar verte por aqui. ;)

    Welcome back Vicks!
On time for a big bang celebration!

Well, I just couldn't let such a momentous event, go unblogged by me.

Without going into detail, these 2 months have been rather rough for me, due to my father's health. It's been an ongoing "thing" now, since February.

This is when I had to make a decision, and cut my internet time.

In the early part of the year, I cut off my USENET activities, and concentrated on blogging.

Since the time I started to experience connectivity, and later computer problems, I did the exact opposite -- especially with the World Cup taking a lot of my time.

I'm not sure how I'll juggle things, but due to my decision to take more time off from Med School (since I need to be with my parents, I feel), I will at least not give up blogging any time soon.

Whew! A longer explanation than I wanted to give, in such an off-hand way.

But at least now, you know.

I have missed all of you so much. And perhaps, here's hoping, you've missed me too. :)

    MAS COSAS SOBRE CASTRO, LATER!!

I will go around Miami taking pics tomorrow, God willing.

    Whew, I'm beat. It's almost 4:30 AM!

    Cheers,
    Victoria

  • Welcome back Victoria! For me July 31st was a double celebration! Victoria's new computer and fidel's possible demise! While we don't know castro's current status, the fact that they announced the transfer of power to his brother is a good sign for the eventual freedom of the Cuban people! I too was at the Versailles late last night getting ready for the real big party when castro's death gets confirmed!!!

  • Welcome back, Vic, at long last ;-)

BTW, you have a double http:// in the FIDEL CASTRO HAS STEPPED DOWN link so it doesn't work correctly.

  • Vicks,
I've been so swamped, but well, I have some fun reports back at KillCastro. Let's just hope that the old bearded toad is finally stretching his varicose legs for the last time.
    Have a good one!

    RON!! Que gusto tambien! ;)

I am so so happy you are around, since last we spoke, more or less, things were shaky.

But doubtlessly, with your inimitable effervescence, you've recouped!

We shall definitely Dr. Who it, soon. ;)

A few of my pics are too dark, but let's see when I take dad to hospital (he is covering for a colleague), if I don't swing by Versailles yet again.

    Missing you awfully, Ron. :)

    Cheers,
    Victoria

  • Welcome back Victoria! For me July 31st was a double celebration! Victoria's new computer and fidel's possible demise!

JOSE!! I am so happy you are around today, too.

Ya que las cosas mejoraron demasiado con esta nueva computadora, estare mas pendiente de ti. ;)

While we don't know castro's current status, the fact that they announced the transfer of power to his brother is a good sign for the eventual freedom of the Cuban people!

    Para mi, he's dead.

We've seen too many times past Communist leaders' deaths being announced little by little.

Obviously, since the fall of the Berlin Wall, some people have forgotten how things "were done" in the past.

And though I am not old enough to remember Brezhnev or Andropov, I do know what happened when they died.

We won't even talk about Tito, Hoxha, Kim Il-Sung, etc.

Above all, it's the need to CONTROL everything which follows, since their cronies' know, this is not the death of a man, but of a system.

I too was at the Versailles late last night getting ready for the real big party when castro's death gets confirmed!!!

WOW! Llegue casi a las 4 de la manana aqui!

So close and yet so far, Jose. ;)

I have been posting on Val's blog, Babalublog, and urge you too, Jose, if you haven't already.

That and Robert's blog, are the best for first-hand Cuban-American reaction to this "crisis".

Besos, mi vida! Espero que tu senora y hijos estean de los mas bien. :)

    Cheers,
    Victoria

  • Welcome back, Vic, at long last ;-)

    Kullrad!! Babycakes!

Fortunately, due to the power of IRC, you and I haven't been as strangers to one another, as others on Sundries, but I missed you too. C--t. ;)

BTW, you have a double http:// in the FIDEL CASTRO HAS STEPPED DOWN link so it doesn't work correctly.

    Oh, ta, Kully.

I will sort that out immediately.

BTW, speaking of IRC, since I picked up my computer from the porters at 3 PM, until the brief time I stepped out to 'celebrate' the Castro news, til the time I got home, continuing on until 7 AM, sleeping until 11:30 AM...I have been working on my computer non-stop.

I'm sure this happens to all of you who buy a new computer, and don't have some kind of programme to transfer files easily from one pooter to the other, but I have to manually search for, install, and configure all my settings, as I am used them.

    What a pain.

The IRC programme itself took about 1 hour to have looking just so, with passwords, etc.

And I am not even half-way through updating the new computer!!

What I really didn't want, is to 'come back' to Sundries, and then disappear, which creates an awful impression.

But I may just have to beg your indulgence, until I get things set up properly.

I will post something soon, on the topic.

For sure, I shall return on Monday, 7 August, as I had planned! :)

    Cheers,
    Victoria

    Bibaporru. ;)

BABY CONSIDER YOURSELF LINKED WHEN YOU DO!

It's funny you know, but only the other day, a friend gave me a link about French bloggers.

They have taken to blogging, en masse, in France.

Basically, the report quoted a Frenchman saying that it makes utter sense, since "we French are so arrogant, and think we should be running the country". :)

And it interestingly for us, also said that French bloggers, even the very big ones, don't link as much to other blogposts, and don't band together as a community of bloggers, like what happens especially in North America.

The suggestion is that their viewpoints are what counts, and not so much listening/noting what goes on around the world of Blogosphere, even if it's in agreement with them.

That's a good point, if true.

If I see something on Kill Castro, or Babalublog, I make sure I link to it.

I have very precise viewpoints on just about everything (since I too am arrogant ;), but that doesn't mean I can't reference others, since I'm not living in an intellectual bubble.

BTW, one site which was listed, which I found rather fun, was a guy who founded the blog so he could meet his hero, Clint Eastwood! :)

    It's called, unsurprisingly, Bonjour-America.

Check out his fantastic pro-France in WC 2006 audio-Utube-blogposts!

    Cheers,
    Victoria

  • The Force is strong with this one.

    Welcome back, Darth Victoria.

I don't share your sentiment just yet. I will be a lot more joyful once Commrade Fidel is dead and buried, with a stake driven thru his heart for good measure. He's been "dead" and "buried" before, and that hasn't slowed him down.

That said, one wonders if Raul might not see this as a golden opportunity to fully seize power. Perhaps a sudden and untimely passing of Fidel, blamed on the Yanqui Imperialists, arm-in-arm with the other wannabe commies in the region (yeah, that's you Hugo Chavez, and probably a guest appearance from Cindy "Evil Buuuuush" Sheehan). I dunno if Raul has the...ummm...cajones to try.

But being the temporary holder of power can be galling if one has...aspirations. But he may be the loyal brother. But we shall see if others have such aspirations. Fortune does favor the bold.

We certainly do live in interesting times.

Sorry to hear about your father's health issues. And yes, you should spend more time with your folks. I haven't heard of anyone who regreted spending time in that manner.

I've been beating on your blog daily ever since you disappeared. I was about to dispair and move your entry to the "weekly blog" list from the "daily blog" list. Good thing I didn't, eh?

  • Victoria,

Welcome back! The local blogosphere sorely missed you.

And what a day to pick for coming back!

Thanks as usual for the kind words and let's hope this is the beginning of a long celebration.

  • Glad to see you back, Victoria. I stopped being worried so much since I googled until I found on World Cup boards, but I am sorry to hear about your father.

Good luck with your relaunch, so to speak.

  • We missed you and worried! Welcome back! *Hugs!*

Seems the Cuban Goat is still alive. Can we party for his illness? Is that unseemly?

Heck with it. Viva the Illness!
