Scheduling Conflict
As you know, I never miss a Brazilian carnival nor do I miss the Oscars. Unfortunately, this Sunday I will have to miss largely one or the other. It's first day of the famous Samba Schools Grupo A in the Sambodromo float parade, as well as Oscar Night!
I am actually interested in this year's Oscars, too, as I believe 2008 was especially a good year in film. But who can resist the pull of the heady sensual Rio carnival?
Share your opinions about which one I should watch live. As I have a DVD-R (not a DVR), it's very much an either/or situation, I'm afraid.
In other words, do my readers want more of this?

Or this?

I vote for Brazil! The Oscars can be seen many times over, through numerous sources.

Carnival, definitely. Then again, I'd choose pretty much anything over the Oscars which IMO is Olympic ice skating writ large. (Yes, Heath Ledger is going to win not for his awesome performance in Dark Knight but so his daughter can come up on stage and the Hollywood illuminati can cry and purge their guilty souls.)

Carnival-because you're the blog I read that covers it.

Darn, that's hard to argue against, CL. Ron, Ernie and Starless concur.
But see, here's the thing. The Oscars is on Sunday only, whereas the Sambodromo parade is on Sunday, and Monday.
I think I am leaning towards the Oscars guys. :P
We'll see! Keep opining please. And thanks so far!

Ernie, alas, "Mamãe eu quero" is from the genre known as samba canção and far away from the samba to be heard during carnival, REGRETTABLY.
Starless commented about losing interest in rap when it turned into gangsta rap/hip hop.
Well, unfortunately, samba canção had the same evolution -- turning into "pagode".
(Pronounced Pah-gaw-jee)
It sucks comparatively. ;(
Cheers,
Victoria

Oh, sweetie, I know, but I couldn't remember any other songs at 7:00 am. I lived in a very Brazilian section of town, in a very Brazilian building. I had neighbors from almost every state da República Federativa do Brasil.
I hope you have fun. They are a very fun bunch!

No! It wasn't a reproof. :)
Just that I too feel sad about what has happened to one of the best musical genres on earth. Sniff.

Fun coincidence: I will be going to a Brazilian rodízio this Sunday!
Here is a video with some famous pagode singers:

True, it is sad. Part of it is that they weren't very fond of Carmen Miranda...

I'm still speechless over the second picture and the contemplation of physics.

If you set up an Oscars thread, I'd jump in...better still, set up a Twitter account and tweet it. That's probably the thing I miss most from the A-house commenting: simul-blogging.
