Smurfed

Don't you love it when brutally cruel ex-colonial powers suddenly discover their morals?

Yes, the country that brought you atrocities without name in the Congo, where little children had their hands cut off by directive of the debauché King Leopold II, are sponsoring this UNICEF Belgium TV ad about the horrors of bombing little kids in wartime.

The little nippers who might actually remember the Smurfs, however, will rarely see it, as Belgian TV will only broadcast the ad after 9 at night.

Watch video here.

Here's a screen shot to comfort you as you illegally download that stunning tribute to Belgian and UN humanity, Hotel Rwanda.

Next Week:

UNICEF France brings you, "Weapons of Mass Destruction Found in Homer's Underpants", and UNICEF UK sponsors a very clever Wallace & Gromit ad called, "The Murder of the Were-Insurgents".

(Wednesday's real blogpost below, called Abuelita)

  • Well, your blog is not only entertaining but educational! I have been to Belgium, but I didn't know about the millions killed in the Congo by King Leopold II. You are right , there is a holier than thou attitude that the "Old Europe" often displays which can tick me off.

I am glad to see that a Conservative woman (brilliantly featured in an earlier post of yours)will now take over in Germany!

If you can forgive me a "some of my best friends are..." moment, I will admit that I love Belgium.

Whenever a Frenchman makes fun of Belgium in front of me, I just laugh at them.

The Belgians are a lovely, gemütlich people, with much to recommend them, especially their tasty cuisine

(Even if not their deadly boring and ugly capital city ;).

    But please...

You are right , there is a holier than thou attitude that the "Old Europe" often displays which can tick me off.

...as you infer, they throw out holier-than-thou barbs at countries as if they NEVER EVER committed anything wrong themselves.

And oh! when you mention King Leopold's atrocities, they reply, "oh that was ancient history".

Sure it was. Just ask the Rwandans, and Congolese if it's not.

I am glad to see that a Conservative woman (brilliantly featured in an earlier post of yours)will now take over in Germany!

And do you hear WORD ONE about this from the US media?? No, practically nothing.

I guarantee you, Jose, if it had been an SPD first-WOMAN chancellor of Germany, MSM would have covered the story much much better.

What's worse, is that her dad was a Lutheran pastor.

Conservative, pro-USA and religious, the horror.

    Cheers,
    Victoria
