What Do You Mean No More Escargot?

French Finance Minister, Christine Lagarde, listening to grim economic news during the G20 Ministers and Central Bank Governors' Meeting, held in São Paulo on November 9th.

Either that or she just found out Camille Paglia wants her face back.

(Oh hush, I love Camille Paglia!)

IN THE COMMENTS: Anonymous (one of Sundries' various anonymous commenters) reminds me about the latest Paglia love letter to Palin on Salon. This bit was my favourite:

But no, reporters have been too busy playing mini-badminton with every random spitball about Sarah Palin, who has been subjected to an atrocious and at times delusional level of defamation merely because she has the temerity to hold pro-life views.

How dare Palin not embrace abortion as the ultimate civilized ideal of modern culture? How tacky that she speaks in a vivacious regional accent indistinguishable from that of Western Canada! How risible that she graduated from the State University of Idaho and not one of those plush, pampered commodes of received opinion whose graduates, in their rush to believe the worst about her, have demonstrated that, when it comes to sifting evidence, they don't know their asses from their elbows.

She also perfectly described what I felt in watching Cindy McCain go through the campaign motions:

McCain's brusque treatment of his long-suffering wife, Cindy, was also off-putting -- nowhere more so than after his concession speech, when he barely remembered to give her a perfunctory hug. Probably no one is more relieved by McCain's defeat than Cindy, who seemed too frail and tightly wound for the demanding role of first lady. Now she can slip away once more into blessed privacy.

I'm not sure if he was brusque, but let's just say that at times she seemed floating in an out-of-body Jacqueline Kennedy campaigning experience. McCain needed a doughty Midwesterner like Mamie Eisenhower, but he got a skittish Western greyhound like Cindy. That's neither of their faults.

I love alliteration- even short ones.

  • McCain married Cindy because she was rich and he was ambitious.

As you recall, I once wrote where the money came from (her father was Kemper Marley's right hand man). But blood-soaked and dirty money is still money, so where it came from didn't deter McCain, a man who truth be told is willing to say or do anything to advance his own career.

    How pathetic, Eli.

JFK's dad's money was as besmirched as they came. He married a beautiful socialite. He was infinitely ambitious.

This is doesn't take away one single iota of what he stood for, and what he accomplished in life.

In fact, I'm not stressing that you're making a double-standard argument. I'm pointing out how really vapid your line of argumentation is.

    Cheers,
    Victoria

  • McCain had his Mamie but gave her up . . . I like Cindy McCain but I sensed he is not particularly attentive to her and she just seems "sad" to me. I'm very disappointed in Mac's lack of support and failure to denounce those who have engaged in turning Sarah Palin into a cartoon character and national joke. I expected better of him.

    Victoria, your blog ROCKS!
