For Paul

I'm going with the Pittsburgh Steelers over the heavily-favoured Bronks, later Sunday.

Since I don't have a dog in this fight, the Fins being what they are (although things look mighty rosy in the future), and since I have no established link to Colorado, I decided to plant my cheering affections squarely on the young shoulders of Big Ben Roethlisberger.

In fact, and with all due respect to my Colorado-centric readers, I haven't been able to stand your bloody guts since the odious (odious!) Avalanche beat my (my!) Florida Panthers for the Stanley Cup in 1996.

So take your Mike Shannahan plug-and-play running back system, and your scraggly bearded Jake the Snake, and kiss my Floridian salon-tanned hiney.

You are SO losing Sunday. Go Steelers!

  • We'll have to agree to disagree apparently.

(and really, I'd probably kiss your Floridian salon-tanned nethers out of admiration rather than abjection, but that's just me)

    (did I cross a line there? If I did, apologies, if I didn't, . . . . cheeky)

Soon we'll know who was correct (but my track record has been poor, and not much separates these teams, so enjoy the game)

Being that I'm from professional football deprived (unless you count USC) Los Angeles, I root for good games, not particular teams.

And speaking of sport, FoxSoccer.com has a contest where the winner gets a week in London and 2 tickets to the Chelsea v. Tottenham match on March, 11.

Only problem, you have to express your supreme fandom (in an essay of 250 words or less) for Chelsea.

I'm guessing some rewards aren't worth the price.

(and you'd think I'd ask who Paul is, but I won't)

Only if you insist...smooches. Not that I have a dog in this fight, other than geez, I have to listen to my steel-head relatives rant on about the Steelers yet again.

(tho I don't disagree with your opinion on those accursed Avs)

  • Thank you Victoria! I had been in haste a bit ago, that is the reason for the deleted post, but at least I didn't disrupt a thread this time, just took up more space which is what I normally do anyway.

I had put in a possibly perceived as gratuitous "Who Loves You, Baby!" and that would not do.

So, just before game time, I will join in with you and expose my winter-white, Pennsylvanian-born fanny to the home field advantaged Denver Broncos, a lot of good it will do them too, and suggest they pucker up. It's Show Time!

By Blogger Paul, at Sun Jan 22, 03:01:00 pm GMT-5

  • I know it's only halftime but Victoria's prediction is looking very good so far! Go Steelers!

I'm off to the Heat game, Go Heat!!!

  • I remember that Avalanche-Panthers series well, as the Avs swept to win the Stanley Cup. :-D

Maybe my hometown Broncos weren't worthy enough of an opponent, but the Steelers are scary-good. It doesn't matter who wins between the Panthers and Seahawks, the Steelers are bound to win the Super Bowl. (I don't mind as much when the Broncos lose, so long as they lose to the eventual NFL Champions. ;-)

  • Heaven, I'm in Heaven.....
It's Savor Time. Now how do I keep you, Victoria, on my side?
I can't believe this a 2nd year quarterback and a 36 year old fullback going to the Super Bowl. Jerome Bettis gets his wish, to go to the SB in his hometown of Detroit.....do I hear a Cinderella year about to happen?

Victoria, you are beyond sweet to title your post as, wait, you do mean THIS Paul don't you? What a delightful surprise to see that, it got a big, big smile immediately! Win or lose, I had already won. Thank you.

    Stay with them, please?
Shanahan may very well have thrown the game should someone have advised him of your salon-tanned hiney offer. Mr. Churchill would have been proud, no sacrifice too great. I do hope it wasn't my Pennsylvania fanny offer.

  • I could have been more wrong, but not by much. Great game by the Steelers, mediocre game by the Broncos.

I look forward to seeing the Steelers against whoever two weeks from now in Superbowl XL, should be fun whichever team they'll face in opposition.

By Blogger XWL, at Sun Jan 22, 06:36:00 pm GMT-5

  • Well, it looks like the Seahawks and they'll match up very well. It's going to be a good game.

Apparently, I have to become a Heat fan and that's fine with me.
But I can't recall seeing anything about soccer in this desert up North. I'll have to look around or follow them here.
So, what place are we in? :)

  • We'll have to agree to disagree apparently.

I checked your blogpost out, during what was a busy Sunday for me.

Nice betting odd links though! I shall use them in future.

(and really, I'd probably kiss your Floridian salon-tanned nethers out of admiration rather than abjection, but that's just me)

    I'll take it!

    (did I cross a line there? If I did, apologies, if I didn't, . . . . cheeky)

    Don't be silly.

Anyway, if you ever do, be sure I'll take you tap you ever so gently on the arm, and then whack you upside the head.

Soon we'll know who was correct (but my track record has been poor, and not much separates these teams, so enjoy the game)

I knew that the Steelers would win. I don't know why, but I just did.

Cowher has been due for ages, and since I had Big Ben last year in the fantasy, when everyone doubted him, thinking it was a fluke good season by the rook, I knew he was for real.

    He's solid.

Being that I'm from professional football deprived (unless you count USC) Los Angeles, I root for good games, not particular teams.

Don't you still root for Raiders or the Rams? ;)

And speaking of sport, FoxSoccer.com has a contest where the winner gets a week in London and 2 tickets to the Chelsea v. Tottenham match on March, 11.

Mmm, delicious! Oh wait, at Stamford Bridge?

    We're toast.

Only problem, you have to express your supreme fandom (in an essay of 250 words or less) for Chelsea.

    No fanks!

I'm guessing some rewards aren't worth the price.

I can lie like a Marv Albert rug, but not about my "love" of Chelsea, even if it means a freebie trip to London.

(and you'd think I'd ask who Paul is, but I won't)

Boo. Do you not know your fellow Sundries colleagues? ;)

    Cheers,
    Victoria

    Strawberry lipgloss, who knew!

Not that I have a dog in this fight, other than geez, I have to listen to my steel-head relatives rant on about the Steelers yet again.

They've been without ranting for a long time though, so you can suffer for a change. ;)

You know why I like the Steelers? Read below in my soon-to-be written reply to Paul (of York).

(tho I don't disagree with your opinion on those accursed Avs)

I knew you weren't all bad!

    Cheers,
    Victoria

  • Thank you Victoria! I had been in haste a bit ago, that is the reason for the deleted post, but at least I didn't disrupt a thread this time, just took up more space which is what I normally do anyway.

    Hush now, you disturb nothing.

Recently blogger.com posted an Althouse reply twice...and I felt like a fool.

But I didn't erase it, for whatever reason.

    NTTAWWT. ;)

I had put in a possibly perceived as gratuitous "Who Loves You, Baby!" and that would not do.

    Sure it would!

This gives wardrobe malfunction a whole new meaning.

  • I know it's only halftime but Victoria's prediction is looking very good so far! Go Steelers!

If it's any consolation to my critics, I thought Carolina would win, in a tightly-fought, low-scoring game, by a Kasay field-goal.

    Drat.

I'm off to the Heat game, Go Heat!!!

Yay! GO HEAT VERSUS THE QUEENS!

    P.S.: You've inspired a blogpost, Jose! Gracias. :)

    Cheers,

Let me in on a secret.

I like the Steelers because of the following reasons:

    1- Roethlisberger (a feisty guy)
    2- Bettis (a nice guy)
3- Cowher (best chin since Shula)
4- Pennsylvania is a blue-collar state, with hard-working people of the strongest kind

And I love me some blue-collar people. It's my father's gift to my character.

Victoria, you are beyond sweet to title your post as, wait, you do mean THIS Paul don't you? What a delightful surprise to see that, it got a big, big smile immediately! Win or lose, I had already won. Thank you.

Yes, it was you -- although I see another wonderful Paul (Worthington) posting. Hey Paul!

    Stay with them, please?

I don't have anything against Seattle -- and I like Mike Holmgren since his Green Bay days.

But I don't have a great link to Seattle, and they're not a swing state like Pennsylvania ;) -- so stick to your Steelers I shall!

Shanahan may very well have thrown the game should someone have advised him of your salon-tanned hiney offer. Mr. Churchill would have been proud, no sacrifice too great. I do hope it wasn't my Pennsylvania fanny offer.

Fanny is a tricky word. It means the front bit which women have, which men don't, in the UK.

    I'll stick to hiney. ;)

    Cheers,
    Victoria

  • I could have been more wrong, but not by much. Great game by the Steelers, mediocre game by the Broncos.

Correct me if I am wrong, but whither Jake the Snake, there go the Broncos.

Maybe Shannon Sharpe had been just as important as John Elway in the past, but the QB in these types of games, IMHO, are very import.

    2 TDs, versus 2 INTs.

I look forward to seeing the Steelers against whoever two weeks from now in Superbowl XL, should be fun whichever team they'll face in opposition.

    I couldn't agree more!

This parity thingie has made for a lot of fun Super Bowls, in the past decade or so, don't you think?

    Cheers,
    Victoria

  • Well, it looks like the Seahawks and they'll match up very well. It's going to be a good game.

I didn't watch the late game -- it seemed like a blowout from the first snap...

But totally agree SB40 will be massive.

Two good offences, and pretty decent defences.

But I think Bettis in Detroit, his hometown, will just be very special for the Steelers.

Apparently, I have to become a Heat fan and that's fine with me.

    Great! The 76'ers suck anyways.

But I can't recall seeing anything about soccer in this desert up North. I'll have to look around or follow them here.
So, what place are we in? :)

Erm, actually I don't know much about the A-League -- but JSU does!

And Jim Goloboy, should he delurk.

    I'll find out.

    Cheers,
    Victoria

  • Since we seem to be adding a basketball theme here, duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude

    (Dude, was on FIRE!)

  • Okay, wait! The Miami Heat are a basketball team.....!!! I'll be a pig in a blanket. Who'd have known!! So much for soccer.

Let me in on a secret.

I like the Steelers because of the following reasons:

    1- Roethlisberger (a feisty guy)
    2- Bettis (a nice guy)
3- Cowher (best chin since Shula)
4- Pennsylvania is a blue-collar state, with hard-working people of the strongest kind

    All the Above.
But, but, but......the best reason, I was born and raised in Pittsburgh until departure at age 17 for fame and fortune...
and almost all of my family still live there.
Loyalty, the Steelers give that to the city, as long as a Rooney holds them and people give it back to him and his team.
To me they are a symbol and a reminder. As are the mills rusting. That was my family.
