Cheney's Bad Aim

Remember my prediction about Cheney stepping down this year.

Details are just coming in, but apparently Vice-President Dick Cheney was at the Armstrong Ranch, in South Texas, and during a quail shoot, he accidentally pointed his rifle and shot a 78-year old friend, Harry Whittington.

Mr. Whittington is an attorney in Austin, Texas.

He was taken to a nearby hospital with all due speed, and the Vice-President and Mrs. Cheney were at his side, throughout.

He's alive, alert, and said to be in good spirits considering, MSM TV outlets are reporting.

If you want politicised brouhahas like Katrina, you'll love what will happen to this situation, in the upcoming week.

But at least we'll get some good SNL skits out of it.

CORRECTION: Commenter Pete says my usage of rifle is a trifle off...as indeed it is. This is a very startling thing, for a girl who shot her first rabbit at the tender age of 10 or 11, and actually inherited a pair of Purdeys from her grandpa. Ah well.

UPDATE: This story is a little peculiar. Not just the facts of it, but the detail that it was the lady owner of the ranch (a friend of the VP, as you can imagine), who leaked the story to the local Corpus Christi newspaper. The accident actually happened on Saturday, though the White House issued the confirmation Sunday, after the newspaper broke the story.

  • As the victim is a lawyer, perhaps Cheney had remarkably good aim.

  • I'm no expert but I think a rifle and a shotgun aren't the same thing. Yeah, a nit-picky detail but one that jumped out at me. I'm one who doesn't think this is a big deal - I'm no hunter but I know a lot of them and I used to be around guns a lot so know accidents happen.
