I agree with your sentiments, but I don't think we'll be lucky enough for things to turn out that way.
Obama himself won't play the race card, but the media will do it for him. If he is criticized a fraction of the degree to which Bush was criticized, we'll all be branded racists.

Well, not to sound too pessimistic -- we have already heard some of this pre-election.
A black politician / leader (forget his name) recently said Obama isn't a real "black American." Michelle is, but Obama's black relatives were not slaves in the United States, therefore ....
When people say -- "Look at Barack Obama -- he achieved!" It will be pointed out that he went to a really posh private school in Hawaii -- "he hasn't really been here...."
After so many years, I think it will be hard to shift the emphasis.
If that is pointed out it will still be some one else's fault.
And I think I detected during the campaign that while Obama didn't play the race card too heavily (don't foreget the sly references to how he doesn't look like other presidents, etc.) I never heard him denounce others suing it. (The vile attack on McCain...)
It's going to be long 4 years.

I know a number of liberals (yes, liberals) who have happily convinced themselves that this marks the end of race-based affirmative action. We shall see.
