Remembering Dr. King

Say what you will about tomorrow's Presidential Inauguration (and this is fair warning to my dear readership, that I will be largely mute on the topic), but even a die-hard Republican cannot help but smile at the wonderful kismet of Martin Luther King Jr. Day being followed by a virtual national holiday for blacks everywhere, on January 20th.

Considering we're a few days away from February, which is African-American history month in the US, it must make a lot of people feel fulfilled indeed.

Here is Dr. King, who is one of my orator heroes, holding up his Nobel Prize, wearing the most beautiful mourning jacket and Ascot tie for the event. How proud he looks. How proud he would've been on Tuesday.

He didn't get there with us, but his legacy burns bright.

BDS Claims Another One

Bush Derangement Syndrome, the precursor to Palin Derangement Syndrome, as well as to its ancillary condition, Obama Derangement Syndrome, has claimed its most recent suicide victim after Hunter S. Thomspon and Carol Anne Burger did away with themselves.

His name was Jim Blanning, and in his 72 years of existence in this world, he had served in the Big House for "racketeering, organized crime, fraud and larceny". What a swell guy.

His crude self-made gasoline bombs delivered to two banks brought toney ski resort, Aspen, Colorado to a virtual standstill this New Year's Eve (I wonder if the Kennedys were seriously inconvenienced or did they just continue playing touch skiing on the slopes).

Attached to one of the bombs, was a note with this exact wording and spelling, not to mention capitalisation -- bowdlerised to protect the innocent.

"WE HAVE ALL OF THE COP THREATS TO US UNDER VERY SOPHISTICATED ELECTRONIC SURVEILLANCE. DO NOT F--- WITH US OR THERE WILL BE MASS DEATH LIKE WE HAVE ALL BEEN PART OF OVER IN THAT F---ING QUICKSAND TRAP THAT ROVE'S AND CHANEY'S MONKEY BUS PUT US INTO WHERE SO MANY OF OUR SOUL MATES AND BROTHERS DIED VERY HORRIBLE DEATHS." - Blanning (a.k.a An Average RMN Poster)

That's Rocky Mountain News, in case you didn't know it, as I sure as heck didn't. My first thought was, "Wow, Richard Milhouse Nixon has a blog?".

I have a few comments for the recently departed Mr. Blanning. I hope he can take a minute to respond.

  1. If you're such an internet veteran and all, why don't you know that capitalising your entire message is considered SHOUTING and very rude, online? Or was that the point?
  2. It's Cheney, not Chaney, you stupid half-wit. If you're going to hate on someone, learn how to spell their frikkin' name. By the way, it's Victoria with a C, not K.
  3. We won Iraq. It has turned out to be an unfathomable success after the Surge. You'd think you'd have gotten clued in when Bushy dodged two shoes thrown at his head, but I guess you were too busy posting and bomb-building to notice.
  4. Did ever you build your dream house? Was Myrna Loy hot in bed?
The comments at the RMN post on this are even more pointedly hilarious. I reproduce a few of them for your approval.

- "INC: There has never been a terrorist attack on US soil since 9/11!!!!!

God bless bushy."

- "I see I've wondered onto the playground again.

A smart robber would use his suicide vest to rob individuals on Aspen's streets, not banks. "Your wallet or my life." You're likely to run across a drug dealer. In Aspen, the money's in the pockets."

- "When one old fart with a bee in his bonnet and no knowledge of chemistry can bring the richest city in Colorado to its knees, we know that the terrorists have won." [Heh]

- "Terrorist? Is every mentally ill person with something inflamable now a terrorist? Let's not stretch that word so far it loses all meaning." [Totally]

- "He forgot to add rush Lameball and DS hanitty on flax news!!"

And perhaps my favourite, because you have to know your pop culture:

- "The "bomb note" sounds like it was written by "a small foreign faction" ...".

Paging Patsy Ramsay...

Look, this situation could've turned out much worse than inconveniencing half of Hollyweird during their New Year hols. It is also tragic that one small-time crook and coward is now elevated to something far more sinister like a "terrorist", partly because journalists are desperate to tag anyone with that name -- and thus to reduce its unpolitically correct tag for "scummy extremist foreigners".

But at the root of this is an important message to all who allow politics to ruin their lives.

This man is not the guy you want to become. Seek help, before others suffer too.

Santa Dip

The last absolute sovereign in Europe, Prince Albert II of Monaco, son of legendary American actress beauty, Grace Kelly, decided to don a Santa Claus outfit on Christmas eve -- just before taking it off to go swimming.

No, the Grimaldi-crazy-genes are not acting up.

In fact, the Prince took a dip in the (no doubt still cold) Mediterranean sea in order to raise money for charity.

Prince Albert may not be royal, but his impulses were still noble.

P.S.: Incidentally, I had planned a longer, and weightier post about Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg's remarkable decision not to sign a bill put before him into Law -- dealing with euthanasia. He refused, citing his Catholic faith as reason, and the Prime Minister stripped the (largely honourary) powers the Grand Duke had as sovereign.

I will try to post on that soon, as it is not the first time in history a royal head-of-state has put his conscience before his constitutional duty. It is a very fascinating topic to explore.

Have A Glass Of Bubbly On Me

Happy New Year's Eve, Sundries' readers!

The computer quit on me three times, then I left it running all day -- when I got back, it was still on. Whew. I may be able to compose that Movie Guide tonight, as my family and I will be staying in.

Incidentally, I went to Wal-Mart for the first (and very possibly, the last) time in my life. Yes, I know, I know. Miami's own Paris Hilton blogs before you...at least I knew they didn't sell walls there.

I want to, really really want to say I liked it. I love Country Music. I like diners. I even feel I could like NASCAR, if I started watching. In short, I like loads of blue-collar, just folks things. But Wal-Mart? Yeesh.

It actually made me want to stop shopping, and my darlings, that's not a good thing.

Drive safely, people!

Resolution Revealed

Most of us have one recurring resolution for any New Year -- to shed some of those excess pounds we've picked up the year before.

Me, I was hitting the gym hard back in August, and was almost where I wanted to be, but La Palin's nomination derailed that as I turned Sundries into an one-woman Governor Palin cheering section. My workouts suffered.

Perhaps it's just as well, given the fact that some of us cannot stop at 20-30 lbs; take Donatella Versace here, seen sunning herself in St. Barths yesterday.

(I warn you, once you start looking, you can't stop)

My 2009 New Year's Resolution? When you get to 53 years of age, do not look like Donatella Versace. Ever. Cheeseburgers, good.

Christmas Tipjar

Every year, I give a little something to Christmas-themed charities. This year I am hurting the same as everyone else. It seems I am credit-rich, but cash-poor. I am tightening my belt as I type.

Yet, I still found a few pennies to send to one of my favourite organisations, Toys for Tots, run by the Marine Reserves to give toys to underprivileged children every Christmas.

Should you be able to spare some dosh, and believe me, I know it's hard, it's not too late. Help to put a smile unto some kid's face on Christmas Day!

Oh, incidentally, did you read this?

This holiday season is a time to examine who’s been naughty and who’s been nice, but I’m unhappy with my findings. The problem is this: We liberals are personally stingy.

Liberals show tremendous compassion in pushing for generous government spending to help the neediest people at home and abroad. Yet when it comes to individual contributions to charitable causes, liberals are cheapskates.

Arthur Brooks, the author of a book on donors to charity, “Who Really Cares,” cites data that households headed by conservatives give 30 percent more to charity than households headed by liberals. A study by Google found an even greater disproportion: average annual contributions reported by conservatives were almost double those of liberals.

It doesn't have to be Toys for Tots, or a Catholic-based charity like I also donate moneys to at Christmas. Choose which ever one you want.

Charity shouldn't be a question of political inclination. It's just a question of doing the right thing. So, pace Spike Lee and Governor Huckabee, do the right thing.

Festive Free Fall

I wanna glide down over Mulholland
I wanna write her name in the sky
Gonna free fall out into nothin'
Gonna leave this world for a while

And I'm free, free fallin'
Yeah I'm free, free fallin'

Get Ready To Awwww Loudly

Awwww. Little Trig dressed up as Santa. Enchanting.

Governor Palin and family were on hand to greet the record amount of visitors to the Governor's Mansion, in Juneau, yesterday. Over 3300 people braved awful icy conditions for the open house.

One lady was not a local resident, either. She came all the way from where commenter Bekah lives, in Virginia, just to be able to meet her political heroine.

Denise Spencer flew north from Yorktown, Va., for the open house and the chance to meet Palin.

"I said, ’OK, this is what I want for Christmas,’" she said. She’s also considering moving here.

Palin, she said, inspired her to become involved with politics again and she volunteered for the McCain-Palin ticket.

"She’s straightforward — what you see is what you get," Spencer said.

I wouldn't live there, but ever since I heard about the moose stews, the interminable snow machine references, and the caribou cookouts, I tell you, I'm considering taking a trip up there -- something inconceivable for this inveterate city girl a mere year ago.

But I have always wanted to see America as she was over 100 years ago: especially the kind of people who lived at the time. It's not in some tourist trap "wild west" town in Colorado or inside the waxy confines of a museum where that can be found.

It's in Alaska.

ADDED: That is a mountain of a man extending his hand for Palin to shake. He looks like a rather festive polar bear. Maybe Palin can pin him on her hideous Senior Yearbook Photo blue suede outfit instead of that usual pin.

Happy Turkey (Sandwich) Day!

Ahh. Room Service. One of the pleasures of an extended hotel stay, especially one which falls during the most cherished of American holidays, Thanksgiving.

As I dig into my delicious turkey sandwich and scrumptious lamb soup this day, I want to wish the Sundries readership a very blessed holiday -- to you, and to all your families!

I'll be back soon, guys. Just recharging those batteries en famille. Hope you are doing the same.

As we give thanks for our blessings this day, though, please spare a prayer for those in other hotels today, who are in the grips of a terror few of us will ever know...

P.S.: Mmm. Turkey. I mean, ugh, David Shuster = Turkey.

Hug A Veteran Today

Whatever it is that you call today, whether it's Veteran's Day, Remembrance Day, Armistice Day, Poppy Day, please join me in honouring those who served their country.

Here in this blog, we have Ruth Anne Adams, former JAG officer, and total Sundries heroine. I also honour my father's service, as well as my two male cousins, one of whom is currently deployed abroad in Afghanistan.

I, for one, am forever in their debt.

Please check back later, as I update this blogpost with photos of the commemorations around the world.

In case you wonder why some call it Poppy Day, or why poppies are associated with 11 November (the date which ended World War I), the answer lies on Flanders Field:

In England, Wales, and Northern Ireland the poppies are paper representatives of the flat Earl Haig variety with a leaf, mounted on a plastic stem. Wearers require a separate pin to attach the poppy to their clothing. In Scotland the poppies are curled at the petals with no leaf. In Northern Ireland, because the poppy honours soldiers of the British Armed Forces and due to The Troubles, it is worn primarily by members of the Unionist and the Irish Protestant community.

President Woodrow Wilson had these words to say on November 11, 1919 when the first commemoration of Armistice Day was proclaimed:

"To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"

1) AUSTRALIA

IN THE COMMENTS: Please join me in honouring Chickenlittle's late father. He writes:

My father (RIP) was a Korean War Vet (19 year-old inductee). He served in the 141st tank battalion. I'll be flying the colors for him especially tomorrow.

The Grinch Who Stole Halloween

This McCain supporter who denied candy to pro-Obama kids is a grade-A, po-faced idiot.

She is possibly a PUMA, because according to Newsmeat, she donated $250 to the Clinton Township Democratic Federal Club Election Acct (whew, what a mouthful). Nothing to McCain-Palin, or anyone else.

I like the PUMAs for what they are doing, but the first time I read a thread of theirs on one the Hillary forums, a poster suggested that she was seriously considering not giving to anyone who showed up wearing an Obama mask. A few said they felt the same way.

Come on now, people. These are kids, but it's apparently you who need to grow up.

Willow Cuddles Trig The Elephant

Willow Palin often gets the short stick on my blog, poor girl, but this one makes up for it. Best photo of the campaign, bar none.

ADDED: Greta van Susteren just loves the Palins. Here they are, talking about their unusual Halloween.

Do Not Eat Pirate Coins Candies, Canadians

A deviation from my usual blogging, since it was Halloween yesterday, and your kids may have gotten these in their haul.

There is a recall for Sherwood's Pirate Gold Coin Candies in Canada, said to contain melamine, which killed several babies this year in China. This warning came in the form of a viral email, but it was confirmed by Snopes. There is no danger in the USA version, but you know, if I were a parent, I'd be careful.

Remember these choccy gold coins? I do, despite not liking candy (I know, I was a strange child. I even loved carrots and broccoli).

Alas, mateys, one has to be more careful these days not with whackos who might insert needles into Halloween candies, like when I was growing up, but with shoddy Third World production in a globalised economy.

Sasha Obama's Halloween

Senator Barack Obama was back in Chicago so he could share Halloween with his two girls. He had told Ellen Degeneres that his eldest daughter was going as an "evil fairy", but the little one, Sasha, wanted to dress up as a "corpse bride".

And so it was. Here is the candidate walking alongside (and shooing away reporters) his cute little daughter. Awww.

I think Obama is a very good father. I like that about him.

ADDED: I am not one to make Barack Obama = Jack Kennedy references (in fact, I find those intolerably forced), but that particular shot above reminded me of this one with Eisenhower. It actually won the Pulitzer.

In turn, I was reminded of another photo of him with his Halloween-costumed kids.

Tell me, were the Kennedys ever accused by Democrats of using their ever-present kids as "props"? No? Funny that.

Piper The Princess And Trig The Elephant

Look at Piper and Trig.

LOOK AT PIPER dressed like a princess.

LOOK AT TRIG dressed like an elephant. Awesome. Just awesome.

Governor Palin donned a pumpkin foulard, in a nod to Halloween today. No need for a costume on her part. She is already coming as Sarah Palin.

Chuckles aside, you can see what she and the Palin family are trying to do, don't you?

They're trying to regain the August 29th roll-out narrative about them, their values, and their lifestyle: just ordinary Americans, who rose up to the highest reaches of power, but are still 'just folks' who like other just folks wear jeans, and go out together en famille.

This tells me that Governor Palin continues to be haunted (good word for Halloween) by the spectre of that $150,000 wardrobe snitch to the press. I think the American people have moved on, and it only and truly matters to her critics who use it to batter her over the head, as they would with anything, but Palin is savvy.

The one thing they cannot really take away from her is her authenticity. She knows that pricetag is actually rather cheap given her lack of polish for a politician on the national stage, but that during a time of economic crisis, it looks like a double-standard.

See, Americans have this problem with rich people.

Usually it just bubbles under the surface, in times of fat. But in times of lean, the richies get it between the eyes in this country. You saw that vividly with the populist "Wall Street fat cat" phrase constantly thrown around to condemn those living just a more high-octane version of the American dream.

(Incidentally, I am a bit of a populist, who has a tendency to view blue-collar, working folk with rosy-tinted glasses, because they live lives and have values I deeply admire. But I am not a populist Republican -- in fact, I dislike that kind of politician or one who uses that kind of mindset, like Governor Mike Huckabee. Populists have shown themselves to be the most dangerous kinds of politicians in history and I even regret that Governor Palin sometimes takes a leaf from that rhetoric page)

It comes as some sort of blessing that the wardrobe leak came AFTER many weeks of campaigning, when the American public had already (rightly or wrongly) formulated a vision of who Sarah Palin is.

If it had been leaked in the first weeks of September, it might've either ruined her and driven a 'hypocrite' narrative.

Well, this post was intended for Piper (and baby Trig) and her beautiful choice of Halloween outfit, which actually I don't think is a costume. She just likes dressing like a fairy tale princess.

Remember when her mum was being sworn in as Governor of Alaska? Whilst her eldest sister went looking as if she were going to the mall, Piper went in a tiara and satin dress.

Love it. Go Piper! Piper Palin '44.

ADDED: Oh. I realise now who Piper's bone-coloured wide sweep collar reminds me of. A Venetian doge!

This famous portrait of Doge Leonardo Loredan hangs in the National Gallery in London, and I remember being fascinated when younger, when being taken to see it.

I marvelled at the sumptuous garment the Doge was wearing, and realised even at my young age, that he must've been deeply aware of his presence, and what he wanted to relay to the Ages about himself.

That's what people who are self-aware do. They don't just protect their image for today. They insist it be consistent, for History is a harsh judge, one moreover, which judges for eternity.

Palin, both Sarah and yes even little Piper, somehow get that too.

IN THE COMMENTS: JSU brings up a giggle-inducing cynical point, which you know, if true is rather good.

Vic, I'm surprised you didn't pick up on this:

Orange is the PUMA color. McCain wore an orange tie, too, at a crucially symbolic juncture.

Only the highest practioners of the art of politics speak in "code". Actually, Senator Obama does it all the time (notice the first time he ever wore jeans whilst stumping was two days after Governor Palin famously did). I'm not speaking of the outwardly showy kind of code, like Senator Lamar Alexander's woodsy plaid shirts (read, "I'm a regular guy"). But code which passes unnoticed, and unremarked upon even by those whose living it is to decipher such things.

If this is true, and not just a Halloween message, but a silent one to the Orange-Pantsuits-in-Exile in the crowd, she's a bareknuckled pol with instincts we've rarely seen at this level.

UPDATE: I almost don't want to add this, but I have to. Koz Kids are attacking this appearance by the Palin family, and reading more "code" than even we can dream up here.

I refuse to link to this direclty, to give them traffic, but here is the link.

They Dressed Trig as an Elephant
by stef
Fri Oct 31, 2008 at 01:14:30 PM PDT

Is that cool? Making your baby into a party mascot?

Piper is a Snow Princess. Her mother is the Ice Queen of Mean. And scary Uncle Mac escaped from Night of the Living Dead.

The replies included wondering if Governor Palin dressed up her son as "Dumbo" because he is a Down Syndrome baby...

Sigh.

But one other person went even farther. Much much farther.

Seriously? This is how people think? How twisted. It's HALLOWEEN. Give it a rest, losers.
